What you need

  • Paper matching the selected file size
  • Scissors and ruler
  • Clear tape
  • A small amount of clean tissue

Follow the steps

1. Print and measure

Butter block step 1: Print and measure. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.

Choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper. Print the template at 100% / Actual Size, with Fit to Page off. Measure the 50 mm line. If it differs by more than 1 mm, correct the print settings before cutting.

2. Cut the connected net

Butter block step 2: Cut the connected net. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.

Cut only the solid outer boundary and the short solid slits. Keep all six labeled faces connected. Do not cut the dashed folds. An adult should handle cutting when assistance is needed.

3. Pre-fold all dashed lines

Butter block step 3: Pre-fold all dashed lines. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.

With the labels outside, fold the left and right ends inward along the front face. Fold the top, back and bottom at their shared dashed edges. Pre-fold the joining tabs inward; keep the closure tab open.

4. Join the sides and back

Butter block step 4: Join the sides and back. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.

Fold the top toward the two end faces. Secure its side tabs inside the end faces with tape. Fold the back down and secure its side tabs to the same end faces. Keep the entire bottom face open so the joins stay reachable.

5. Add a small amount of filling

Butter block step 5: Add a small amount of filling. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.

Turn the construction upside down so the open bottom faces up. Use a small amount of clean tissue for this prototype. Add it loosely through the open bottom. Do not pack tightly. This is a paper construction test, not a tested slow-rising toy or a product for mouthing.

6. Close the bottom last

Butter block step 6: Close the bottom last. Analytical paper-hinge illustration; no physical test claim.
Structure illustration · v2 · Open image to enlarge

Fold the bottom side tabs inside the end faces. Fold the bottom into place, tuck its closure tab inside the back face, then tape the final seam from outside. Check each join and lightly press once; record tearing, sticking or deformation rather than hiding it.

If something is not working

The edges do not meet

Check the 50 mm calibration line and fold direction. Do not trim a face to hide a mismatch.

The bottom will not close

Leave the last seam open, remove excess filling and check that tabs sit inside the end faces.
